House of Sweden, Washington D.C

More than an embassy

House of Sweden was inaugurated in October 2006. The 6 400m² large building next to Potomac river is home to the Swedish Embassy but also a networking arena for companies with connection to Sweden.

House of Sweden is designed by Gert Wingårdh and Tomas Hansen, Wingårdhs arkitekter, with the aim of creating a new kind of embassy with transparency and with Scandinavian design.

Gustafs Scandinavia produced over 2 450m² panels for the walls and ceilings. The entire building is cladded with maple panels. To the ceiling, we created, together with Wingårdhs, seven unique perforation patterns that creates clouds of lights which are illuminated from the back. The perforation has subsequently been named “Washington perforation”.
