The German word ‘Reet’ refers to a common reed that grows on waterfronts, and which is often used for roofing. A “reed thatched roof” is one of the oldest forms of roofing and provides an impressive insulating effect.

This form of craftsmanship can be found in modern day on the Baltic Sea, at the holiday resort Reetdorf Geltinger Birk in Schleswig-Holstein. On the most beautiful natural beaches of the Baltic Sea, 41 stylish reed houses are to be built. Some are still in the process of being completed.

What is noteworthy about the cottages is their proximity to nature, through the surroundings and also through the choice of building materials. The use of reed, bricks and wood characterises the ambience of the holiday residence. Organic lime in the wall paint provides natural protection against mold and absorbs smells and pollutants, while being resistant to all kinds of bacteria. The moisture regulation of natural lime ensures healthy sleep and a pleasant indoor climate. A large part of the furniture in the interior was made of solid wood and developed especially for the reed village. The exterior walls consist of mineral building materials such as sand, cement and expanded clay and thus provide optimum thermal insulation. Metals such as crude steel or corten steel form an interesting architectural contrast to the elements of the houses built in regional tradition. The service building of the holiday village is equipped with solar panels and secures the power supply of the entry system. There´s also an e-charging station for charging electric vehicles.

The combination of all these materials creates a symbiosis of architecture and environment. This is seen in the exterior facade as well as in all interior rooms.

The particularly rural location is directly on the Baltic Sea and located in the middle of the Geltinger Birk nature reserve. The untouched nature is noticeable with its seagrass meadows and reed swamps. A mixture of salt and fresh water collects in the depressions, creating a habitat for plants and animals. Many bird species, dragonflies, wild horses and cattle herds are at home in Birk.

The picturesque landscape has already attracted many artists. Therefore, in the cosy, detailed and at the same time tasteful furnishing, one finds also some works of art. The close connection of the area to artistic pursuits can already be experienced in the reception building. The guests can see a small exhibition of paintings and sculptures. Guests can choose between three different types of holiday homes on the 10 hectare complex.

These three types differ in terms of equipment, size and costs. You can choose between the “Atelierhaus”, the “Künstlerkate” and the “Malerhaus”. All houses are between 110 and 220 m2 in size.

Here you will find the right holiday home for every conceivable holiday arrangement, whether a 3 generation family, friendly couples or a small family.

High-quality extras such as box spring beds, luxurious bathrooms, saunas, fireplaces or beach chairs guarantee the highest level of living comfort at a 5-star level. It is apparent that all houses were furnished with a love of decoration and design.

The Verona ER37 door handle from KARCHER DESIGN on a 3-part rose also promises the highest quality and design. Due to its simple elegance it fits perfectly to the luxurious furnishings of the reed houses. The stainless-steel door handle takes on the form of a flattened oval. The handles therefore fit pleasantly into the hand and promise a high level of comfort upon entering the rooms. The rounded edges convey a harmonious image at the door; the handle fits stylishly into the overall aesthetic of the materials and elements in the room. The 3-part rose technology was developed by KARCHER DESIGN and stands for unique quality and easy installation. The rose of the door handles and key escutcheons consists of 3 parts: the mounting plate, the carrier plate and the screw ring.

Overall, the Reetdorf is an exemplary project for the combination of highest consumer comfort and consistent sustainability without the loss of quality.
