URBICANDE – Street furniture designed in collaboration with Jean-Michel Wilmotte

URBICANDE – When urban safety meets design: the new benchmark for cities and local authorities

In a context where local authorities, cities and town halls must reconcile public road safety, urban fluidity and city centre enhancement, the URBICANDE – Security by Design range, designed by La Barrière Automatique in collaboration with architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, provides an innovative, high-performance and aesthetically exemplary solution.

Previewed at the Salon des Maires, this collection inaugurates a new way of protecting public spaces while respecting the spirit of the place.

Security through design: a patented innovation at the service of local authorities

The URBICANDE range is part of the patented Security by Design concept, designed to harmoniously integrate anti-intrusion protection into the city.

The principle: a base crash-tested according to international standards, on which various modules (bollards, benches, planters, posts, barriers) can be fitted, allowing local authorities to create a coherent and safe layout.
According to the official press release, this system guarantees both the protection of people and the aesthetic coherence of the urban landscape.
Protection adapted to sensitive areas: pedestrian streets, roads, shopping areas

URBICANDE meets the growing needs of cities in terms of:
- Securing pedestrian walkways,
- Protecting shop fronts,
- Developing meeting areas,
- Securing school surroundings,
- Preventing ramming attacks in city centres,
- Organising traffic flow on roads and in busy streets.

Designed to protect without detracting, the range fits in equally well in town centres, shopping streets, urban promenades, squares, cycle paths and heritage areas.
The crash-tested bollard: real, long-lasting protection
At the heart of the range is the URBICANDE slim bollard, crash-tested to withstand the impact of a 3.5-tonne vehicle travelling at 40 km/h.
Unlike conventional bollards, half of which deteriorate quickly, this one:
- offers effective protection against intrusion,
- drastically reduces maintenance operations,
- enables substantial savings for local authorities,
- and blends discreetly into pedestrian walkways and shopping streets.

Its understated, geometric design evokes ‘a calm strength, capable of absorbing shock without ever breaking’.
Versatile bollards to structure and beautify urban spaces
URBICANDE also offers crash-tested bollards with a diameter of 25 cm, available in heights of 60 cm and 1 m.

Thanks to a connecting collar, they offer multiple design possibilities:
urban benches,
pathways,
guardrail barriers,
secure planters,
simple bollards to structure the road network.
This modularity makes it an ideal solution for:
shopping areas,
forecourts,
waiting areas,
protected pedestrian walkways,
heritage districts,
the surroundings of sensitive buildings.

The collection forms a coherent whole that is functional, refined and high-performance: ‘Each piece combines impact-resistant technology with refined lines.’
An exceptional collaboration for the public space
The result of a meeting between Hélène Hardouin, president of LBA and urban architect, and Jean-Michel Wilmotte, the collection combines technical requirements with urban aesthetics.
Wilmotte sums up this approach:
‘The collection we have designed combines technical requirements with visual appeal.’
This collaboration marks a first in the perimeter security industry: a crash-tested range that fully embraces its aesthetic role and contributes to a safer, more fluid and more welcoming city.

URBICANDE: a strategic choice for the cities of tomorrow

Local authorities today have to deal with complex challenges:
➡ protecting citizens,
➡ preserving the attractiveness of city centres,
➡ ensuring the coherence of public spaces,
➡ limiting maintenance costs.
URBICANDE meets these four objectives thanks to:
- resistance validated by crash tests,
- superior longevity compared to conventional street furniture,
- modularity allowing the devices to be adapted to local contexts,
- refined aesthetics that encourage acceptance by residents.
