The National War Memorial – India

The National War Memorial near New Delhi India is spread over 40 acres. Recently inaugurated by the Indian Prime Minister, it observes those lost in wars dating back to the 1940s.

The National War Memorial near New Delhi India is spread over 40 acres. Recently inaugurated by the Indian Prime Minister, it observes those lost in wars dating back to the 1940s.

WeBe Design Lab Architects won the competition in 2017 held for the design of the Memorial and the contractor Nagarjuna Construction Company Ltd, India was appointed soon after. Ligman were honoured to have been asked to provide the lighting for most the memorial, working with the Lighting Designer: AWA Lighting Designers. This included 560 RADO recessed fixtures, over 200 MIC projectors and 30 JET wall fixtures.

The Memorial has five concentric circles, a central obelisk under which is an “eternal flame” representing the immortal soldier (amar jawan). The innermost structure of the memorial complex is called the Amar Chakra (Circle of Immortality). The structures surrounding are the Veerta Chakra (Circle of Bravery), the Tyag Chakra (Circle of Sacrifice) and the Rakshak Chakra (Circle of Protection).
