Hengqin Port

The light uniting Macau and Guangdong

This avant-garde project aims to promote both the “hardware connectivity” of the infrastructure and the “soft connectivity” of the various regulatory regimes of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao. Built in Hengqin, an island of Zhuhai in southern China, it was opened to the public in August 2020. The aim was to simplify and speed up connections between the Macao and Guangdong province, whilst strengthening cooperation between Macao and Zhuhai in the Guangdong Province on one side and between Macao and Guangdong on the other.

The building fits perfectly into the environment thanks to an architectural language developed by LWK + PARTNERS that is able to dialogue with the context. The building’s façade is clean and simple, free from decoration and with vertical elements on each level that recall the two towers positioned alongside at heights that complement each other. The final effect of the whole complex is a dynamic skyline inspired by the natural landscape of the island. Inside, the functional spaces used for work areas and those reserved for visitors are strategically arranged to offer the best possible experience. In consideration of its environmental-friendly architectural value, the project is a candidate for 3-star certification in line with the standard adopted in China for green construction.

To better emphasise the structure of the building, the studio of the HES Technology Group studied a façade lighting project that sees the use of a selection of Linea Light Group professional products all marked by a colour temperature of 4000K, able to underline the details with an impressive illumination result.

First is the Archiline, the linear profile available in a very broad range of solutions and made with materials of the highest level and with the utmost precision, utilised in two different sizes – 280 and 420 mm. Over 1200 units were used to highlight the three levels that comprise the façade, each consisting of a series of superimposed “pillars”. Thanks to its high degree of brightness and flexibility, Archiline has been embedded into the flooring at the base of each “pillar”, so as to fully illuminate the building right to the top whilst also reproducing the undulating movement of the sea in a natural way. The resulting scenographic effect is truly astounding.

To illuminate the pedestrian area, Periskop was chosen, as a projector with a small size and high power. This solution is particularly appreciated also for the practicality of installation, made even easier through the use of a bracket that renders it stable and allows the light beam to be directed as necessary.

Finally, attention was also paid to the entrance areas and car parks where the Suelo uplight and the Portik downlight were used respectively. The former, particularly appreciated for its efficiency, versatility and sturdiness thanks to the robust flange, is characterised by a completely revamped minimal design, with a black screen-printed protective screen for greater visual comfort and the patented AquaStop® protection system. The Portik, on the other hand, combines simplicity and innovation thanks to the FOL™ filter system that guarantees a homogeneous diffusion of light.
