Managing Smoke in Shared Indoor Spaces: The SP160 Cabin Tested to GS-IFI-M14

A tested smoking-cabin solution for separating smoking activity from surrounding indoor environments

Maintaining high indoor air quality is an important consideration in modern building design, particularly in environments where designated smoking areas are included. In shared spaces such as offices, commercial buildings and public facilities, smokers and non-smokers should be able to coexist while limiting the impact of tobacco smoke on surrounding indoor spaces.

Enclosed smoking cabins provide a practical solution by separating smoking activity from surrounding spaces while capturing tobacco smoke at the source. Standardised testing provides an objective means of evaluating the performance of these systems.

A selected SP160 smoking cabin configuration was tested in accordance with GS-IFI-M14 with four active smokers under defined test conditions. In practical applications, the cabin is designed to accommodate approximately three to six users, depending on usage patterns and installation conditions.

The evaluation simulates realistic smoking activity under controlled conditions to determine whether tobacco smoke and related pollutants remain effectively contained within the enclosure. During testing, emissions released into the surrounding environment are monitored using specialised measuring instruments that detect and quantify hazardous substances.

The GS-IFI-M14 evaluation confirmed that the tested SP160 configuration met the applicable test criteria for non-smoker protection under the defined test conditions, demonstrating its ability to limit smoke emissions into surrounding indoor spaces.
