ON THE GRID WITH EVA BERENDES

A German artist that blends the boundaries of art and industrial design

The work of Berlin-based artist Eva Berendes invokes a beguiling effect on the viewer, which is imposed by intentionally blurred lines between product and art. Geometric forms and pops of bold colors permeate her creations which include room dividers, folding screens and wall units. Her pieces recall real functionality, yet certainly stand on their own as art. Grid lines and geometry are central motifs of the mostly two-dimensional designs, perhaps artifacts of her background in painting, which she has seamlessly carried over to applied art. She has in doing so created a body of work both inseparable from design, but that is not quite furniture. The result is as maddening as it is composed.
