RASTER BY LISETTE APPELDORN

A young Dutch designer creates her own version of traditional tribal masks

Inspired by traditional African tribal masks, Amsterdam-based conceptual designer Lisette Appeldorn created her own contemporary interpretation with Raster. A minimalist rendition of various animals, including a fox, bear and crocodile, the masks are made from thin plywood. The designer used different folding techniques to create 3D geometric forms and patterns (that incidentally remind us of Eliza Strozyk’s wooden rugs). The lack of defined features gives the masks an anonymous feel that is ultra modern and even a bit surreal. Pose them on a bright colored background, and we can’t tear our eyes away.
