SURFACES ON WHICH YOUR SETTING AND SITTING WILL BE UNCERTAIN

Patrick Parrish Gallery's psychedelic installation at Design Miami 2014

Entering Patrick Parrish Gallery‘s exhibition at Design Miami was somewhat like stepping into a life-sized sketchbook. Titled “Surfaces On Which Your Setting and Sitting Will Be Uncertain”, the installation was a surreal play of of gridded patterns upon gridded patterns created an ever-changing visual puzzle that made reference to the Italian design collaborative Superstudio’s 1970 Quaderna series and work by Ettore Sottsass.

The steel, gridded furniture was designed by the Minneapolis-based art and design studio RO/LU and accompanied by gridded textiles from the multidisciplinary design collective Various Projects. RO/LU’s collection included a dinning table, stools, a cabinet, a standing figure and a figure on all fours that doubles as a coffee table. Various projects contributed a series of gridded clothing items in a variety of materials such as neoprene and silk. The entirety was set against gridded wallpaper and a wool rug that were also designed by the collective.

The project was presented as one of Design Miami’s Design Curio booths, but was first presented at Patrick Parrish’s New York Gallery last September.
