carina deuschl showcases collapsable xtend bathtub at imm cologne 2016
prototyped by carina deuschl, ’xtend’ redefines the ordinary concept of a bathtub.
the project was featured at the 2016 imm cologne ’pure talents’ contest spotlighting up-and-coming designers from around the world. made of carbon fiber and cut by using high pressure water jet technology, the bathtub combines design, functional and comfort. once folded, the construction weighs seven kilograms and becomes only 8.5 millimeters thin. extended, its padded machine washable fabric inlay provides a distinctively refreshing bathing experience.
all components, such as the water inlet, legs and fabric insert can be attached to the space-saving plate for the purpose of transportation or storage, making assembly of the bathtub fast and intuitive. the ‘xtend’ is determined by a contrasting yet complementary black and white color scheme. the white inlay that completes the tub with a three-layer structure of synthetic higher-performance material.
not only is the fabric waterproof, lightweight, durable and soft, it is also high compressible, such that it can be stowed away in an ultra-thin case. the surface of the material smoothens out completely once the bathtub is filled with water. the ‘xtend’ can go anywhere, as long as there’s a water connection, and once the bath or soak is done, users simply drain the water from bathtub via a pump system.
the ‘pure talents’ contest was commissioned to the german design council to act as overseers and organizers of the young designer’s exhibition and prize at the 2016 international furnishing show. up to 20 new works of students and young designers from around the world are selected and featured in the special exhibition.
