spacetong(archiworkshop) creates mini pavilions for mobile library project

the ‘mobile library’ project is part of a larger initiative by the seoul innovation park, and the city of seoul, south korea to revitalize a site originally occupied by the ministry of food and drug safety. a number of social companies and startups have been gathered, and will continually work from the site to address various social issues in the city.

included within this broader project, is the ‘mobile library’. the key concept is derived from the seoul innovation park’s ‘cube’ logo, which was adapted in various ways to form small library and exhibition pop-ups around the site.

korean studio spacetong(archiworkshop) led the design of four mini pavilions, with additional collaboration by jae-choul choi, john (pyung ki) kim, and woo-yeol lee. the spaces, titled ‘block’, ‘pipe’, ‘mirage’, and ‘membrane’ are named — as you may have guessed — after their most prominent material or feature.

the ‘block’ pavilion is best described as a parasitic addition to one of the site’s existing buildings. standing at six stories, the original structure is the largest, and most visually overwhelming on the site. ‘block’ breaks the volume into a more human scale, and provides enough space for use as a library, exhibition area, meeting space, etc.

‘pipe’, made of scaffolding tubes, is the most colorful pavilion. it draws from the site’s many trees, and brightens its surroundings through its eclectic palette. ‘mirage’ is a reflective structure that bounces the park’s landscape as a waved, painterly like image. inside, visitors get another, more physical sense of the forest. authentic tree trunks serve as seats and bookshelves, and an old pine tree is directly observable through the space’s transparent glass ceiling.
