A green-roofed dwelling perched on the precipice of Burgh Island’s cliffs

This green-roofed ‘Pool House’ in Great Britain is perched on the precipice of Burgh Island’s cliffs. London-based Carmody Groarke collaborated with structural engineers Price & Myers to create a dramatic luxury retreat that “creates a restrained but sensuously uplifting place for guests to take delight in this stunning location”.

The owners of the hotel, Orchard and Deborah Clark, insisted on a sensible approach to the island landscape and the site with the Grade-II listed art deco hotel. The new addition will offer visitors generous views of the the Bantham Estuary and the hotel’s outdoor seawater pool and private beach.

The RIBA jury selected the winning design from a selection of shortlisted entries, including those by dRMM, Featherstone Young, and Threefold Architects. Carmody Groarke’s design was praised for its “positive contribution to the landscape and drama of the setting” and an “unforgettable and luxurious experience for guests”.
