theeAe creates monolithic inside out concept for varna library competition
the evolved architectural eclectic, or theeAe for short, created ‘inside out’ for the now-closed varna (bulgaria) library competition. their concept combines the facilities of six city buildings, and aims to bring extensive services to residents and visitors from a downtown location.
design was driven primarily by strict site regulations, including surrounding buildings’ right to sunlight. theeAe utilized the resulting boundary as a pre-made form, as it just happened to be optimal for rain and snow due to its natural parameters. in addition to the slanted roofline, the team wanted to create a sense of openness. several cuts intersect the mass, greatly lightening its overall impression. the void also allows for presentable book storage protected by glass; as visitors pass by and around the building, they see inwards automatically.
in total, the main storage mass is around 5,000m2. around 80% of available space is dedicated solely to books and archives, the rest is to be saved for public purposes. the monolithic structure features horizontal white metal fins, and perforated panelling for exterior walls. car parking is located beneath the structure, with various offices, lobbies, etc. comprising the three floors directly above.
