Caruso St John scoop prestigious visual arts and architecture award
Celebrating the built environment in which art is displayed, the Critics Circle has just announced its 2016 Visual Arts and Architecture Award; and the winner is feted London based firm Caruso St John.
'As visual arts critics, who cover fine art to architecture via design and craft, we are keenly aware of the environment in which art is displayed,' explained Corinne Julius, Chair of the Circle's Visual Arts & Architecture Section. 'Caruso St John have unfailingly created intelligent, sensitive spaces, whose interiors do not dominate, but rather amplify the art works that they house and whose exteriors relate to the cityscapes in which they are placed. They have a clear and profound understanding of materials and context.'
Indeed, the well-known practice has some serious art world heavyweights under its belt; from the Tate Britain Millbank Project to Gagosian Galleries in London, Paris, Rome and Hong Kong, and Damien Hirst's Newport Street Gallery. Their Gagosian in London's Mayfair is one of their latest offerings.
The architects, who set up their studio in 1990 and recently marked their joint office's 25th year anniversary, have projects in the pipeline in several countries and teach, as well as practice. One of their breakthrough works, the New Art Gallery in Walsall, highlighted Caruso St John's expertise and dedication to the development of the relationship between art and architecture.
Growing from strength to strength, the firm had a lot to celebrate in 2015. Their Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Newport Street Gallery and Gagosian London, were all launched to critical acclaim within the space of a few days.
The award will be presented to Adam Caruso and Peter St John today at the Gagosian London Gallery on Grosvenor Hill.
