Charming wood teardrop trailer is perfect for off-grid eco adventures

Want to go on an off-grid adventure? If so, Homegrown Trailers’ charming handcrafted travel trailer will be right up your alley. Clad in FSC-certified timber, this compact and cozy camper is bursting with eco-friendly elements - from its use of locally sourced, renewable materials to its 800-watt solar array. Created to “roam freely, tread lightly,” this environmentally conscious trailer is designed to bring people closer with nature in a fun, comfortable, and responsible way.

The design for Homegrown Trailers’ sustainable travel trailer began when co-founder Corey Weathers struggled to find a camper that was not only functional, but also green and beautiful as well. As a result, he set out to build “the most sustainable travel trailer possible.” Response to his completed eco-minded camper was huge, and now, with the help of Eric Gertsman and Kimberly Briar, Weathers hopes to bring an upgraded version of his 100% solar-powered camper to the masses through an Indiegogo campaign.

The Homegrown Trailer’s prototype camper features an aerodynamic teardrop shape that’s compact enough to fit into a garage and light enough to be towed by small vehicles. An innovative pop-top roof is covered with an 800-watt solar array that feeds a battery that can last for five days of off-the-grid use without extra charge. The exterior measures 18 feet by 7.4 feet by 6.9 feet, and the structure weighs in at 3,000 pounds.

The cozy wood-lined interior features 94 square meters of floorspace and can comfortably sleep four in a pull-out double bed and a set of bunk beds. The surprisingly spacious kitchen offers plenty of counter space, as well as Energy Star appliances and an induction cooktop. No toxic chemicals or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are used in any of the materials. The home also includes a composting toilet, as well as energy efficient LEDs.

Homegrown Trailers is still seeking funding to get off the ground, although the campers are available for pre-order at $25,995 with delivery promised before summer of 2017. They also offer a lower dollar perk of a 3-night rental of the trailer for $535. To support Homegrown Trailers or to learn more, head over to their Indiegogo campaign.
