vo trong nghia completes lakeside bamboo restaurant on the outskirts of hanoi

vo trong nghia architects has completed a restaurant in a rural vietnamese setting formed from 12 bamboo columns.

the project is located 30 kilometers from the bustling city of hanoi in an area popular with day-trippers, and those traveling to and from hoa binh — another large city in the region. named ‘roc von restaurant’, the structure is situated at the roadside, protecting guests from the busy passing street with its curving crescent form.after stepping down from street level to the dining space below, visitors are presenting with sweeping views of a natural lake. the space under the columns is naturally ventilated and is cooled by evaporation rising from the water’s surface. a circular stage extends out over the lake, capable of accommodating a wide range of events as well as public occupation throughout the day.

the 12 columns employ two different bamboo species — tam vong and luong — each offering different structural qualities. the bamboo has been treated in a traditional manner in order to both ensure the material’s long term durability, and contribute towards a sustainable building approach. a separate support area has been constructed using locally sourced laterite blocks — orange-colored bricks that continue the scheme’s vernacular materiality.
