Temporary eco-friendly container village provides community space for artists and locals

For the past seven years, artists in Poznań, Polan have been breathing life into an empty riverside lot with KontenerART – a makeshift summer village composed of shipping containers, designed with both artists and locals in mind.

Every May the project comes to life and takes advantage of the longer days and warmer weather until the end of August. The container village provides a space for locals to relax and meet new faces, all while taking part in to the creative process and supporting local artists. Numerous art workshops allow visitors to lean new skills and a variety of concerts and exhibitions are also held on site. This year marks the seventh edition of KontenerART and once again it showcases the work of a new architect. Instead of designing new pavilions, Adam Wierciński Architekt chose to simplify the space by creating one large building surrounding a central courtyard. The containers house the music workshop, toilets, food hall, and various art galleries, while the bar and stages are accessible outdoors. The structure’s north and south facing facades are highlighted in a bright orange color that emphasizes the vibrancy of the small village. A rooftop terrace and Bacardi Bar provide unobstructed views of the river, and the central sand-filled courtyard encourages guest to kick back and relax with their feet in the sand. To top it all off, KontenerART features rooftop solar panels, a green wall, and on site grown herbs used for concocting drinks at the bar.
