Benjamin Hubert slots Inlay sofa's legs inside opened corner seams

Milan 2015: Belgian brand Indera will launch this modular sofa system by London designer Benjamin Hubert in Milan next week

Hubert's Inlay seating system is made up of backrest, armrest and seat modules in various sizes.

Each of the cuboid modules can be swapped and reconfigured to alter the shape of the sofa for different purposes or occasions.

Upholstered in fabric from Danish textile brand Kvadrat or leather, the cushioned elements are composed of wooden panels surrounded by foam. The sofa is raised off the ground by four slender die-cast aluminium legs that slot between the seams of the armrests at each corner.

"The sofa employs a Modernist architectural design language, and an innovative seam detail integrates the die-cast aluminium leg and the body of the sofa to create a new aesthetic for this typology," said Hubert, who has previously designed a chair with an exposed timber frame for Moroso.

Each of the metal legs branches beneath the seat and connects to provide a supporting frame.

Hubert created the design for both residential and contract specifications. The version for the home comes with loose cushions for further flexibility. The sofa will be presented by Indera at next week's Salone del Mobile in Milan, Hall 16 Stand F52.

Other products launching at the furniture fair will include wrought-iron tables and chairs by the Bouroullec brothers, and minimal wooden benches by David Chipperfield.
