Residential Palace for an extended family tackles Saudi’s harsh desert environment

For this residential project in Riyadh , the capital of Saudi Arabia, AIM Studio designed flowing organic volumes that will provide accommodation for an extended family. The designers used a parametric model to create an optimal spatial solution that responds to the harsh desert environment - which is expected to be uninhabitable by the end of the century.

The residence brings three different dwellings for all members of the family under the same roof. The design offers a modern interpretation of the way homes were traditionally built in desert areas. Optimal sun exposure, ventilation and generous views of the surroundings were some of the client’s main imperatives.

The architects also created a central void that controls solar gain and facilitates cross ventilation, while concrete overhangs aid in controlling sun exposure. In terms of materials, there is a slight difference between interior and exterior finishings. Natural stone dominates the entire property and varies from sandy, dark colors to polished, warm tones.
