An Architectural Conundrum

Outsized works of art dot the five-kilometer Rehberger-Weg, linking the Fondation Beyeler in Switzerland and the VItra Campus in Germany

This highly unusual outdoor “gallery” in 24 waypoints—binoculars, a streetlamp and other colorful objects—is in striking contrast to the landscape through which the footpath wanders. At its zenith, at Tüllinger Berg, the route offers panoramic views of Weil Am Rhein in Germany and the Swiss city of Basel. In the latter, modern buildings make it more difficult to pick out the once-dominant sandstone spires of the Münster church. The installation will remain in place for a year.
