to be built as eight storeys and defined as a series of infinite rings that enhance connectivity, zaha hadid architects has announced that ‘guangzhou infinitus plaza’ in china, has broken ground.

the sinuous layout of the zaha hadid-designed building mimics the symbol for infinity. the site, measuring at 167,000 square meters, will facilitate a campus of integrated buildings that combine intelligent technologies and environmental sustainability. additionally, the site will host key facilities, including a new global center for R&D — a chinese herbal medicine research and safety assessment center — as well as an exhibition area and gallery. the internal organization will see the departments arranged around a central atrium, with courtyards distributed throughout to promote interaction between the diverse departments.

the envelope will be wrapped in aluminum screens, which is perforated to provide protection from direct solar heat gain and enable rainwater collection. developed with active digital intelligence, the screens’ sensors monitor weather, energy-use and lighting to further reduce overall energy consumption. furthermore, the series of connecting walkways — inside and outside — as well as herbal gardens on the roof, will aim to improve communication and create a pleasant working environment.
