mastering in architecture at the bartlett school of architecture, UCL, eric wong presents his thesis which completely re-imagines the dynamics of britain. in other words, this project explores the possibilities to make this country a ‘truly united kingdom’.

eric wong has been investigating the request of rockerfeller foundation, tasking 100 cities – many of which are capital cities — to build greater resilience and more inclusive economies. indeed, cities grow stronger when they become united. therefore, wong looked into ‘the blazing world’ by margaret cavendish the duchess of newcastle for imaginaiton. this 1666 novel follows a heroine who discovers a world where diversity and inventions work harmoniously together — the knowledge of which she would later transfer to save her homeland, the united kingdom.

for his bartlett school of architecture thesis project, wong employs this hypothetical premise to ask himself what is a re-imagined role of capital cities which suggests alternative typologies for urban settlements. finally, he proposes ‘cohesion’ as the new capital of the united kingdom, located at the center of the british isles – the isle of man. his narrative aims to re-unite an arguably broken britain of the 21st century, providing the disenfranchised generation within the UK and the increasingly dislocated global communities.
