Serene timber cabin in Austrian countryside floats lightly on the sloping landscape

Austrian firm Bernardo Bader Architekten turned a challenge into a triumph with a beautifully serene timber cabin tucked into the Austrian countryside. The solitary structure was built on an extremely inclined landscape that had been previously considered undesirable for construction. However, using the traditional “Walserhouse” design as inspiration, the architects designed the elongated wooden cabin to blend perfectly into its natural surroundings and to sit lightly on the land.

The severely uneven landscape, located in the mountainous region of Laterns, proved to be a challenge for construction. Additionally, the plot is situated between to roads, further adding complications to the layout. To remove the home from potential traffic distractions and to take advantage of the beautiful views, the architects placed the 200 square-meter structure on the very edge of the site.

The home’s simple A-frame design and placement were also strategic measures to reduce the impact of construction on the land. The home is supported by large wooden stilts fitted into a concrete base. This feature allowed the architects to create a compact, elongated design that didn’t extend over the hilly landscape, rather blend into its inclined slope.

The serenity of the larch-clad cabin is continued into the interior. Inspired by the surrounding farmhouses in the area, wood is used as the primary material throughout the design. The interior design is minimalistic, with simple furnishings adding to the Zen-like calmness of the home. Large windows are installed throughout to flood the interior with natural light and to provide stunning views from every room.
