graham foundation celebrates the work of lina bo bardi with 'together' exhibition
celebrating the work and legacy of modernist italian-brazilian architect, the exhibition ‘lina bo bardo: together’ is being presented at the graham foundation in chicago.
open since april 2015, the space is designed by london-based firm assemble and curated by noemi blager. the intimate exhibit showcases new works by dutch artist madelon vriesendorp, filmaker tapi snellman along with photographer ioana marinescu. the culmination of work hopes to drive and encourage new conversations regarding lina bo bardi’s architectural sensibilities.
with a diverse portfolio spanning from architecture, furniture design, writing to curating, the italian architect was constantly influenced by the culture and life of brazil and sought to integrate art with life along with creativity and honesty. very much a part of the modernist movement, many of her projects are based in sao paolo and salvador da bahia.
the exhibition space itself is spread over two floors and includes an immersive installation, photographs, films, and a collection of objects by madelon vriesendorp. the display gives visitors an insight into bo bardi’s privately owned objects, as well as highlighting the creativity and energy that was constantly present in her renowned projects.
furthermore, italian brand arper has collaborated with noemi blager to fabricate bo bardi’s distinctive bowl chair here the chair was initially designed in 1951 but never produced. together, with the blessing of instituto lina bo e p.m. bardi, arper stayed true to bo bardi’s sketches and created a limited edition of 500 pieces to be sold. hand-crafted by highly skilled manufacturers, bardi’s bowl chair collection includes a black leather edition and a fabric version available in seven different colors, each matching three sets of cushions. the cushions can come in the same color of the shell, in two different color shades or decorated with patterns inspired bylina bo bardi’s original sketches.
the exhibition at the graham foundation remains open until july 25th.
