MILAN 2015: MATALI CRASSET PRESENTS THE SELF-MADE SEAT FOR CAMPEGGI

An adaptable design from the French designer that banishes space-dominating sofas

With her Self-made Seat, French designer Matali Crasset re-imagines the living room for the Italian design brand Campeggi. The playful sofa, which can be deconstructed in endless configurations, has its origins in a design initially presented in 1998. Each piece is made from foam and is thus light enough to be lifted and shifted by a single person. A simple orange strap allows users to easily grab, move and rearrange the pieces to create armchairs, seats and poufs (or perhaps even a makeshift table and bed?). The entire sofa can also be stacked and put away.

From a distance, the sofa looks like a paper-wrapped package just waiting to be opened. Orange bands run along the neutral fabric like colorful ribbons and visible stitching subtly emphasizes the form of each piece. Two different sizes are available for constructing the sofa. Larger pieces can be used for the seats and back, while smaller pieces can be used as armrests.

The Self-made Seat truly allows users to reclaim their living space. It turns a fixed object that monopolizes space into fun and functional furniture that adapts to every situation.

The sofa was presented at the Salone del Mobile for the first time, but Matali Crasset is no stranger to the show. Read more about her conspicuous rise to design fame in the special edition of our e-magazine!
