BOCCI CREATES CLOUDS OF BLOWN GLASS

Omer Arbel's latest design makes its debut at Maison & Objet

Ethereal is not always the first adjective that we would apply to lighting design, but it perfectly embodies the latest design from Canadian design brand Bocci. Airy and seemingly intangible, the Bocci 73 is a cloud-like pendant made, surprisingly, from blown glass.

Its frothy, unfixed appearance results when the glass is blown into a loose vessel sewn from heat-resistant ceramic fabric, creating a fluid shape. As the glass cools, it becomes a cloth-like form with the fabric’s uneven texture imprinted upon its surface. And since each light is handcrafted, this technique also means that every Bocci 73 is slightly unique.

Once illuminated, the LED light only serves to enhance the design’s form and texture. Bocci’s Creative Director, Omer Arbel, best expressed the light’s effect: “There is a strange mystery that occurs when these pieces are filled with diffuse light. They become somehow evocative of more than both glass and fabric; they become something new entirely.”

The brand, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, debuted the design as part of Maison & Objet in Paris. Check out more designs from Maison & Objet.
