IMM COLOGNE: EXPLODED VIEW BY VANTOT

Lights that explore dimming through proximity, reflection and movement

When we dim a light, we are in the habit of doing so with a switch or a button. It’s our learned experience with the day-to-day objects that surround us. With their Exploded View series, the Dutch design studio Vantot decided to explore unexpected ways to dim a light. The collection consists of three lamps, each of which can be dimmed with a surprising interaction.

Cumulus dims by obscuring the light through its multiple layers. Three freely suspended cage-like elements slide into one another with each level offering a different intensity of light.

In Eclipse, the light acts as a yoyo. When it is tugged into the lampshade, the shade obscures all but the smallest rays. When it is down, the light brightly illuminates the space.

Finally, Lunar explores how reflection can disperse and change the intensity of light. As the light moves up or down, the reflective shade casts light towards the ceiling or the floor.

The entire series is currently on display at IMM Cologne as part of the Pure Talents competition. Go, see, test and give your concept of lighting a good shake!
