DESIGN CRUSH: VONNEGUT/KRAFT
Two young Brooklynites and their magically minimal design
Simple, simple, simple. With a twist. That’s how we like design, and that’s what Brooklyn design studio Vonnegut/Kraft does best. Partners Katrina Vonnegut and Brian Kraft founded the company in 2011 and have been making sweet, sweet design ever since.
As both designers and manufacturers of their products, the young duo is part of an increasing trend that has designers taking the whole design process into their own hands. The appeal of such an arrangement is understandable. Overseeing products from conception to fabrication lets the studio control the origin and quality of their work. Vonnegut/Kraft utilizes local and regional resources, while striking a balance between modern manufacturing and craftsmanship.
At this year’s ICFF in May, the studio presented a variety of new products: the Relief Mirror, Salt Flats Table, Origin Pendant and the (much talked about) Crescent Lounge. Each piece is contemporary and restrained, but with great attention to detail, including a recessed display on the Relief Mirror for storage and the semicircle-shaped pillow support of the Crescent Lounge. With such endearing details, we think the whole collection crush-worthy and can’t wait to see future work from these two.
