Steel becomes paper-like in the hands of the Japanese designer

Designed for the Italian design manufacturer Desalto, the Softer Than Steel furniture collection by nendo turns an ordinary material into uniquely functional and sleek objects. By adding creative folds, twists and turns, the typically unforgiving metal becomes something pliable and soft. A delicate, cloth-like fold is the back rest for the bench, while the shelves resemble sheets of paper that have been curled along one edge. The coat rack softly twists metal rods into a place to hang your hat, and an ingenious curve creates an armrest, while also creating a seamless connection between the legs to the back. Simple and intelligent modifications that make a world of design difference.
