ROSS LOVEGROVE FOR MOROSO (MILAN 2014)

The British designer contributes two inspiring chairs to Moroso's 2014 collection

Established in 1952 by Agostino Moroso, the Italian design brand is a family business that is in its second generation. Moroso has evolved from a small, artisanal company into a forward-thinking manufacturer that collaborates with some of the best in the industry, including London-based designer Ross Lovegrove. For the 2014 collection, Lovegrove designed two different chairs: Diatom and Monolith.

The Diatom Chair might remind you of summers at the beach spent collecting sand dollars, but despite its nature-inspired design, it is entirely computer generated. Made from 100% aluminum, Diatom is lightweight, stackable and suitable for indoor and outdoor use. It is designed to be durable and affordable, furthering a larger trend of making design accessible to a greater audience.

During the show we were able to gather live reactions from other designers present:

“Love the super light (Diatom) aluminium chair, sublime! It feels most refined, love the way the legs pull out of the shell.”

Patrik Schumacher, Partner Zaha Hadid

“Beautifull very very strong project”

Konstantin Grcic, designer

Lovegrove’s second addition to Moroso’s 2014 collection is the Monolith Chair. Seemingly melted from a block of ice, the sculptural chair is a single plastic structure that comes in both color and metallic finishes.

During our interview with the designer, he expressed his current interest in the idea of space, which manifests itself in Monolith’s cubic form. As a changeless volume, the cube represents a creative starting point, which Lovegrove was able to mold and render fluid through his design.
