DELVA Landscape Architects created a community oasis for the city of Utrecht
Dutch firm DELVA Landscape Architects designed a shared green oasis for the city of Utrecht surrounded by rows of homes with traditional brick architecture.
Their proposal for the area, entitled "The Share-Garden", combines private and public spaces, and will include a plan that will make use of the diverse qualities of the surrounding area. The project's credo, "unity in diversity" is embodied in the treatment of the brick facades, each of which will be unique, and each home will have its own garden, green terrace and green walls, while being unified by the shared green spaces.
Privacy is maximized using an inner area with a smart, half-sunken parking solution, which will serve as the transition between the public street and private living. This is further emphasized by introducing single-story townhomes into the transition-zone. The project includes three types of garden spaces: the lawn, a vegetable garden and a recreational area for kids and animals.
The plan seamlessly blends new architecture with traditional construction, and emphasizes green space within the city using a variety of gardens among the towering brick residences. A green, wavy oasis is enclosed, providing plenty of room for city green programs. The project also includes a storm water collection system and collected water from various roofs is stored in barrels and will be used in watering the gardens.
