Tiny hobbit home carved from a stump is straight out of a fairytale

Treehugger’s Lloyd Alter recently visited an adorable tiny hut that looks like it’s straight out of a fairytale.

Carved from an enormous Sitka Spruce tree stump, the beautiful hobbit-like hut was built by artist and fly fisherman Noel Wotten of Sitka Studio. The whimsical hut took two years to carve and is located in the town of Tlell, on the islands of Haida Gwaii in British Columbia, Canada.

Wotten sourced the stump from a fallen burled Sitka Spruce, one of the largest conifer species in the world that can grow up to 300 feet in height. The enormous stump was hollowed out to create a one-room space and topped with cedar shingles and a droopy copper peak. A few old-fashioned, hand-carved windows punctuate the tiny shed.

The unpainted interior is decorated with some handmade wooden furniture, built-in shelving, photographs, notes, art, and memorabilia of musicians who have played in the dwelling, such as author Paul Quarrington and Eric Clapton. A piece of paper pinned to the wall says: “It has been said that playing guitar in here is like playing guitar inside a guitar!”
