Snøhetta reveals plans for Portland’s green-roofed James Beard Public Market

Need another great reason to visit Portland? Meet the James Beard Public Market, a proposed hub and celebration of local food and drink in the Pacific Northwest.

And as if that doesn’t sound amazing enough, the permanent year-round public market will also be designed by award-winning architecture firm Snøhetta. The Norwegian firm recently unveiled their designs for the project—click through for a first look at the beautiful James Beard Public Market!

Named after the famous Oregon-born chef and “dean of American cookery” James Beard, the proposed public market will be located in the heart of Portland at a waterfront location flanking the western end of the Morrison bridge. Backed by the top Portland chefs and designed with the input of the local community, the daily market aims to promote sustainable agriculture practices, healthy eating, local produce, and provide entrepreneurial opportunities in the local agricultural market. The indoor-outdoor venue will serve as the city’s flagship public market—Portland’s original market closed down in 1942— and feature over 60 permanent vendors, 30 day tables, full-service restaurants, learning kitchens, and more.

Located adjacent to the riverfront park, Snøhetta’s designs for the James Beard Public Market will be generously glazed to open up to views of the park and the Willamette River, and natural light. The wing-like floorplan fans out on either side of the Morrison Bridge; the bridge’s ramps will be realigned to make way for greater buildable site area and a pedestrian north-south through-road.

The market interior has a contemporary feel inspired by the city’s industrial roots. Natural wood covers the tall ceilings and vendor stands, while structural steel columns and trusses provide support. An accessible green roof tops the building and accommodates a hydroponic garden, demonstration kitchen, event space, and gathering areas. The project has an estimated completion date of 2018.
