Boiler Central is a gorgeous renovated hub for creatives in Denmark
Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects celebrates the renovation of Boiler Central, a disused boiler building from the 1940s located in Vejle, Denmark.
The building officially reopened June 24 as the newly branded Design Driven Innovation Centre, which will house 30 companies. The inauguration of the refurbished building comes just over two years after the initial groundbreaking, and it showcases a slew of impressive features.
The 1,200-square-meter (13,000-square-foot) refurbished brick building will become home to over 30 creative companies, as part of an effort to “combine innovation, creativity, design and business understanding and contribute to closer cooperation between private and public companies and knowledge institutions,” the firm announced in a statement. The renovated Boiler Central building is an important visual fixture in Vejle’s landscape, and now it will serve the local business community in a similarly substantial way.
Despite the renovation, many elements were kept intact, such as original signage and some of the graffiti created while the building was unoccupied. Overall, the renovation marries past to present in seamless unity, fitting updates within the existing structure while keeping the building’s original shape and feel consistent throughout.
In addition to the boiler building, SHL also led the renovation of nearby Spinning Mills, which was once Vejle’s largest industrial workplace. That building was refurbished by SHL in partnership with Realdania and reopened in 2010 and is already home to several companies. Now, the two buildings comprise a creative business complex, where some of Denmark’s hottest new innovations might be conceived.
