fabian zeijler improves indoor air quality with momentum and purificatum

fabian zeijler is a young, ambitious designer that recently graduated from the design academy eindhoven.

during his studies he has established himself as a designer focused on the balance between the three following factors: practicality, comfort and aesthetics. these three factors determine to a large extent the shape and outcome, and results in a simple, minimalistic, but refined product. for his graduation thesis he designed ‘momentum’ and ‘pūrificātum’, two products concerned with the purity of air.

‘momentum’ provides a tool for people that want to gain more insight into their own indoor air quality or to whoever wants to improve it. each device measures a different air element: humidity, ventilation and particulate matter. these three elements are the base of a pleasant and healthy indoor air quality however they are often confused with one another. often people refer to dry air or low humidity as the cause of health problems such as anxiety, headaches, dizziness and fatigue. nonetheless, the causes of these health issues are mostly poor ventilation or contamination.

when ‘momentum’ senses unhealthy air, the tranquil product will shift focus and start moving in a rotating motion, in this way the objects draw attention in a subtle manner. if the object rotates for ventilation, windows and doors can be opened to create an airflow that will replace the contaminated air with fresh air. by evaporating water you can solve low humidity. to tackle the problem of particulate matter, the air will have to be filtered.

abstract, poetic and tranquil, their appearance reveals what they are for: a pale blue drop to indicate water, a matte black disc for particulate matter, and a white half sphere with a transparent top for ventilation.

‘pūrificātum’ is a personal air purifier that you can place in front of you as you sit at your desk, while you recline in your favourite chair or when you go to sleep due to the creation of a desktop version and a tall, standing version. since more and more houses, especially newly built houses are spaciously designed due to the removal of non-load bearing walls it’s better to focus on the individual. ‘pūrificātum’ is a personal air purifier that produces clean air within your breathing zone to filter locally the contaminated air particles in bigger open spaces.

the filtered air results in an enhanced air quality that will produce higher productivity due to improved comfort and health. there are two light options, a cool white light to increase the ability to concentrate on your work, and a warm white light to create a relaxing atmosphere. they can be used during times when you’re constantly present in one place (e.g. during sleeping and working at a desk). you can easily change the direction of the airflow by turning the angle of the purifier. ‘pūrificātum’ focuses on an emotional therefore different approach to the appearance of existing air purifiers. it offers a future-oriented solution for better individual health by taking it back to the essence of purifying air.

combining the use of ‘momentum’ and ‘pūrificātum’ in your home will give you an indoor climate that promotes health, comfort and a sense of well-being. the aim of these projects is to give the human more insight into their own indoor air quality and to improve it.
