THE LEFT-OVER-SPACE HOUSE

An Australian WAF 2013 winner by Cox Rayner Architects

Space is finite, both in cities and, more universally, on our planet. In an attempt to reclaim precious city space, we have witnessed community gardens springing up in empty New York lots and rock climbing gyms and open air bars taking over disused factories in Berlin. Another winner from the World Architecture Festival earlier this month, the Left-Over-Space house by Cox Rayner Architects reclaimed and recycled a forgotten caretaker’s cottage on three-meter-wide lot. By expanding the lot linearly, they turned the small cottage into a family home for four, proving that abandoned space is not useless space, no matter its size or shape.
