The glass dome of the Grande Epicerie de Paris

The second Grande Epicerie de Paris opened its doors in September 2017 at 80 rue de Passy, on Paris's right bank in the heart of the 16th district.

Owned by Le Bon Marché (LVMH Group), the etablishment originally housed the luxury fashion brand Franck & Fils, before becoming a delicatessen.

Complementing the first Grande Epicerie de Paris located on the left bank, the right bank version boats a top floor restaurant, which required the existing roof to be raised several metres, along with its majestic glass dome.

The owner was granted a permit to raise the roof strictly on the condition that the existing dome, dating from the early 20th century and made of glass ingots, was faithfully recreated.

A prism of the original glass was meticulously removed in order to make an exact reproduction in term of size, geometry and appearance.

2,336 glass ingots identical to the originals were cast and hand-pressed using the ancestral expertise of master glassmakers. They were placed in shuttering, and the

dome was constructed using traditional methods by the company SOREC. This new dome of glass lacework, identical to the early 20th century dome, now sits majestically in the centre of the Grande Epicerie.

It was only the collaborative work between several industries, mobilizing the skills, expertise and mastering of manufacturing methods, that enabled the domes to be reconstituted.
