Terracotta light and airy blocks

Adolfo Zanetti

The new school in Caslano is made up of three separate buildings. What connects these units, designed to accommodate over two hundred pupils and teachers? The central space, designed as a walkway and distribution pathway, uniting the three blocks to form a single entity.

The architects, Adolfo Zanetti, Lucia Ravagni and Alvise Marzollo, winners of the two-stage competition to award the design contract for this school, also devised a visual link: 40,000 MAAX facing bricks cover the façades, giving a uniform overall look through the material and colour alike.

For Adolfo Zanetti, Lucia Ravagni and Alvise Marzollo. “These buildings are the result of a fruitful collaboration with Terreal San- Marco, whose patient work produced the specific colour we sought so they would fit into their environment perfectly. We chose bricks in a special 11.5 x 49 x 4 cm format, produced using traditional, soft cut technology and installed with 2 cm spacing. The idea was really to fit in completely with the backdrop provided by Caslano, where nature and water are ever-present."
