Narrowness made sublime

Allies & Morrison

The sixteen-floor building designed by Allies and Morrison exudes a rare elegance and is mesmerising to look at. Tall, thin and slender, it fits perfectly on a particularly sharp, tight corner, a stone’s throw from the Thames.

The designers of 67 Southwark Street overcame this structural restriction brilliantly by designing triangular apartments, twelve metres wide on the largest side and just four metres wide at the other end. Each unit occupies an entire floor, with panoramic views over London. On the top floor, there is a large, original terrace for communal use.

Allies and Morrison architecture and planning practice : “This project’s location is just a few cables’ length from our studios on Southwark Street. The terracotta and height of the building refer back to the local industrial heritage. We wanted to use longlength

MAAX bricks to create a consistent minimalist language throughout the building, conveying a philosophy of simplicity and practicality. Clay is also a strong, durable material, which allows us to achieve the simple, repetitive details we designed for the project. Its natural colouring makes it an elegant material that goes well with a great many styles.”
