Architectural Award for shelving system

Zambelli GmbH & Co. KG

The architect Marcus Coelen receives the German Architecture Prize for his concept of rebuilding the library of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing in Berlin.

Markus Coelen about the concept:

"The idea of redefining the world of roller shelves arose after years of collaboration with Zambelli. The library of the Federal Institute for Materials Testing BAM was to be equipped with a future-oriented shelving system and the dusty index card system of the BAM was to be replaced by a digital library. We had the idea that the users of the library independently search for a book through an app and find it automatically. Said and done! Four electrically driven sliding shelving systems were not simply set up in the library but were clad in a visually appealing way with aluminum sheets. The electric drive works like a model railroad. This technique of Zambelli and our idea of a refined appearance have created a whole new product."
