Special luminaires from Zumtobel hit all the right notes in a distinctive Austrian music school

A new cultural and educational quarter is gradually taking shape in the Austrian market town of Wolfurt. Zumtobel teamed up with lighting designers to engineer a series of customised luminaires for the project.

The newly created cultural centre in Wolfurt in the Austrian county of Vorarlberg is characterised by wide sweeping spaces and bold individual constructions. The carefully planned network of external areas and buildings invites people to linger a while and sample the atmosphere of this special area. A central element of the development is a new music school devised by Fink Thurnher Architekten. The sculpted architecture immediately catches the eye, while high-quality materials such as cast concrete, untreated rough-sawn oak, felt, brass and back-ventilated clinker brickwork also form a key part of the ambitious design concept. The new building has already been used intensively by over 50 teachers and 1400 students, including adults and children of all ages. The educational programme covers the entire spectrum of instruments, as well as various different styles of music and dance.

Zumtobel worked closely with the electrical planner Ludwig Schneider and Manfred Draxl from the lighting design office conceptlicht.at to plan and realise a bespoke lighting solution with specially developed luminaires. Among other things, the fittings had to meet strict requirements in terms of flicker-free HD compatibility to guarantee the trouble-free recording of performances. The lighting design concept also required individual LED points to be mirrored in the reflector, which Zumtobel implemented in all luminaires, along with a number of defined lighting distributions to achieve specific lit effects.

Three different square downlights have been selected for the library and the dance studio and to deliver uniform illumination of the floor space in the classrooms. Two recessed fittings can be found in the wooden panel and exposed concrete ceiling sections and a version with an IP54 protection class has been mounted in the outdoor areas. A square wallwasher installed in the concrete ceiling ensures homogenous vertical lighting on the walls, while a linear pendant luminaire fuses a direct wallwasher component with an indirect element to offer pleasant orientation in the corridor areas. Light lines integrated into the concrete ceiling deliver a direct light distribution to help those using the staircase. The energy-efficient TECTON and SLOTLIGHT II LED luminaires from Zumtobel are supplemented by AquaForce and PopPack LED from the Thorn Lighting brand to complete the overall building concept, which has been devised to consistently reduce energy consumption in terms of heating, hot water, equipment and lighting, as well as to minimise the cooling required for both appliances and interior spaces.

The so-called “Hofsteigregion” quarter is certainly growing in terms of size and reputation. The music school, which is now flanked by a new supermarket and sports hall that also feature lighting solutions from Zumtobel, is the logical extension of a development plan intended to make Wolfurt even more attractive for local people and visitors alike.

Wide sweeping spaces and bold individual constructions characterise the newly created cultural centre in the Austrian town of Wolfurt.
