Architectural Dream for a Self-sufficient Home
While the from-farm-to-table trend increases, more interest in permaculture provides a new avenue for architects and clients seeking self-sufficient living.
It’s the case for the architecture studio Penda whose clients, a young family, plan to grow most of their own produce at home. For a small plot of land east of Cologne, in the city of Kassel, Penda has designed such a home that will enable its clients to grow vegetables, fruits and herbs: the Yin & Yang house.
A variety of terraces will make up the roof, where many planters will house vegetation. The sloping roof accompanies rainwater to a tank where it’s stored and later reused for watering plants. The architects have also incorporated greenhouses for winter.
