Designing a schoolyard with freshness islands
Revegetation of a mineralized space
Urban cooling is a concern for cities and municipalities. It is also a concern for school principals who take into account the well-being of students. It is well known that plants increase the humidity level and thus reduce the feeling of heat. In addition, it helps to bring people together and thus to develop social ties.
For this project, ATECH carried out the outdoor layout of the schoolyard of the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris, in the 5th arrondissement.
The aim was to organise the space while planting or developing the existing nature. Urban gardens, in other words planters with seats, were installed. Then, planting boxes with seats were also created around the trees to protect them. Finally, tables with food stands were placed in a quieter area for reading and snacking.
This arrangement brings together various bespoke planting furniture in painted steel and Robinia. The wooden slats have been saturated to protect them. This technique is also a design one as it brings out the grain.
Vegetating this mineralized space will therefore encourage moments of sharing between students.
