DAR BJORN – ZEBBUG MALTA
Metal Ceiling – Atena Baffle System
Located in the historic town of Zebbug in Malta, Dar Bjorn is an important resource for patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases, offering an innovative and holistic approach to health. The structure is important not only for the high quality of treatment it provides but also for encouraging meaningful social interaction among patients, which contributes to an overall sense of well-being that goes beyond physical care.
As part of this mission, the architectural project aimed to create a harmonious balance between private and communal areas, encouraging patients to actively participate in a range of social activities and interactions within the facility. To this end, several communal areas were created to reduce feelings of isolation, such as the rehabilitation gym, where patients can enjoy a stimulating and collaborative environment. The use of contemporary materials and textures, together with large flowerpots and green lawns adorning the walls, contribute to a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.
Inside the gym was used the Atena Baffle system, combining functionality and design. The elements, which are characterised by base 50 and height 150, are made of aluminium and have a Chene Irlandais wood effect finishing. The careful choice of materials, such as bare concrete, light-coloured wood, and black steel, contributes significantly to the creation of an uplifting ambience that fosters an authentic and deep connection between people and the space around them. The purity of the interior not only reflects the distinctive character of the medical structure but also underlines the inherent vulnerability and complexity of each resident’s experience, powerfully emphasising the importance of a welcoming and supportive environment.
