Canada Launches OHPA Heat Pump Program to Boost Affordability and Cut Carbon Emissions
For Residential Home Heating And Cooling Scenarios
The Canadian government has launched the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) program, part of the Canada Greener Homes Initiative, to help low and middle-income households switch from oil-fired heating to energy-efficient heat pumps. Eligible households can get grants up to $10,000 covering costs like heat pump purchase/installation, necessary electrical/mechanical upgrades, backup heating installation, oil-using system conversion, and oil tank removal—slashing energy bills and aiding national carbon reduction.
Beyond financial support, the government provides resources (on heat pump selection, installation, and maintenance) to guide households. The OHPA program addresses high upfront costs, making greener heating accessible, and supports Canada’s 2050 net-zero emissions goal by cutting fossil fuel reliance through promoting efficient heat pumps.
