Over 60 percent growth in the electrical trade for Homematic IP in 2020

Berg Insight study: eQ-3 further expands market leadership in the smart home sector

Market researcher Berg Insight has named German smart home manufacturer eQ-3 the market leader for whole home systems* in Europe for the sixth year in a row. According to the study "Smart Homes and Home Automation" (2021), smart home systems from the eQ-3 brands Homematic IP or Homematic were installed in around 1.35 million European households as of the reporting date. The growth of the Homematic IP brand in the electrical trade has recently made a significant contribution to the positive development. In this sector alone, sales increased by over 60 percent in 2020.

If these results are compared with the figures for the US market, it becomes clear that eQ-3 would also occupy top positions here. eQ-3 would be in second place in the USA behind the alarm system specialist ADT. Not to be neglected in the market significance are also OEM solutions from eQ-3, including products for Deutsche Telekom, Qivicon, RWE/innogy and Bosch. If these are included, eQ-3 reaches over 1.8 million households in Europe with its smart home systems, according to Berg Insight. The steady growth in sales of Homematic IP in the electrical trade has played a major role in the market development of eQ-3. Homematic IP enables specialist tradesmen to participate in the smart home boom. Homematic IP is particularly attractive as a system solution for specialist companies, as a combination of different manufacturers is hardly an option simply because of the liability for defects. In the high-end sector, typically 2 to 3 percent of the net construction costs, i.e. 30,000 to 80,000 euros, and often even significantly more, are invested in home control.

With Homematic IP, however, a smart new building is possible for as little as 3,000 to 10,000 euros, i.e. 1 to 2 percent of the construction sum, in considerably less expensive projects. This makes smart home as a standard in the mass of new buildings realistic and already implemented. This corresponds with a study conducted by Bitkom in 2020: according to this study, 63 percent of all respondents stated "that smart home applications will be found in every household in a few years". The growth of Homematic IP in the specialist trade in 2021 is also fitting: sales more than doubled in the first quarter of 2021 compared to 2020.
