INTEGRAL PROJECT FOR 150 LAMPS IN MADRID

PLAZA NORTE 2 SHOPPING CENTER - Client: SCCE-LSGI

The majestic PLAZA NORTE 2 shopping centre in Madrid, designed by the prestigious Chapman Taylor studio, is in an unbeatable location.

The large central distribution spaces, MALL DÓRICO and MALL TOSCANO, are flooded with natural light thanks to the enormous skylights. Previously, 17th-century Venetian-style chandeliers hung in the space. As part of a comprehensive refurbishment project, the architects proposed to replace them with two groups of lamps:

MALL TOSCANO strategy:

- Point sculpture over voids, large-format lamps formed by three concentric rings. 3 lamps.

Strategy MALL DORIC:

- Linear ethereal development over voids, a cloud of geometric elements (tetrahedrons). 3 groups of 49 lamps.

In addition, all the lamps had to be supported at a height that did not interrupt the visibility of the shop windows.

Based on these premises, several solutions were proposed in close collaboration between the shopping centre's architects, who were in charge of the project, and the architect from the KISSA design team:

In the case of the hoops, they are suspended in such a way that they balance freely, forming three different and unique versions of the same sculpture. The K601A profile was chosen, which provides, on the one hand, a large diffusion surface on the illuminated side and a robust image on the three solid sides, softened by the delicate matt gold surface finish.

For the tetrahedra, the solution was not so straightforward. The union of three bars at each corner, with two led faces of the chosen profile (K312A), caused finishing results that were not compatible with our high quality control requirements. This drawback led to the ideal solution: eliminating two bars per tetrahedron, which was also a shape that, in our opinion, had too much visual weight.

As an alternative, we are left with a more versatile figure, inspired by an "origami dove", which flies in a flock adopting multiple positions, creating a bucolic, ethereal, modern figure, which floods the space with light, levitating above it.

This whole ensemble is held up by a system of stainless steel tensors, anchored to U-shaped trays specially designed for this project, which house the power supply and control equipment.
