UMBRIAN TERRACOTTA FLOOR

Antiqued terracotta strips for a luxury hotel

Here you can see our terracotta installed in the courtyard that opens the doors to this wonderful Luxury Hotel.

For the flooring of a historic building, nothing better than a hand-made and wood-fired terracotta that manages to give the right look to a floor in line with an environment with ancient elements.

The handcrafted terracotta, with its unique and inimitable characteristics, is a valuable element, whose naturalness allows it to be used in combination with any environment and style of furniture. Each artifact is made by hand, beaten in wooden molds and cooked in wood-burning ovens, exactly as the Etruscans, predecessors of our lands, did. This ancient production allows us to create a type of terracotta that approaches, if not equals, the historical terracotta that you can find in the palaces and farmhouses of a few centuries ago.

In this case it was used in our Cotto Terre Umbre, in the Listello format. The color of this clay is clear, almost a powder pink, which creates a terracotta with all the natural shades of the earth, and of the subsequent wood firing. To make the floor even more integrated into the context, the Antico Buttero finish was chosen, which is reminiscent of ancient terracotta in all respects. The surface of the tiles therefore appears 'worn out', as if it had gone through the centuries together with the structure itself.

We carefully follow the Etruscan Method, not only to create terracotta that is authentic in shape and color, but also to give the products the technical characteristics of the right porosity and compactness, essential for the creation and practicality of a floor.

The flooring of an accommodation facility is the practical example of a terracotta that must be protected from dirt and stains, especially in a structure where heavy traffic would otherwise create enormous problems. How do we make it possible?

With the right support and the application of exclusive treatments, made with products carefully studied over the course of our thirty years of experience. We took a cue from history, using the historic protectors of terracotta such as linseed oil and beeswax. With the technical evolution of the methods and materials used in construction, we have witnessed a re-evaluation of natural products which not only excel in terms of effectiveness, but are also completely non-toxic and beneficial in terms of living comfort.

Our treatments go to protect the terracotta and make it extremely practical in normal daily cleaning actions. By carrying out the treatment after laying the floor, the natural crevices of the surface and the joints themselves are protected. In everyday cleaning, careful aspiration will therefore be enough to avoid accumulations of dust and cleansing with products with the right formulation that do not affect the treatment.
