Handmade terracotta and wood-fired floors

One of the key roles of the home floor is, in addition to laying a solid foundation under your feet, is to fit entirely into the environment in which it is located and to form part of the furniture, in harmony with the architectural style of the building.

In this beautiful project we have supplied both the terracotta for the external and the internal flooring. In both cases, the cotto is perfect.

The property is located in Moresco, a town perched on top of a hill that rises from the sea, whose walls in terracotta make up the entire village certainly calling for an important attention to the choice of materials.

Our terracotta is in fact a natural material, made of clay of Sienese depth that, with the mere addition of water, go to form the dough of a product that is then worked manually by the hands of skilled craftsmen. Each product is in fact beaten manually in wooden molds, customizable in shape and size, to form a floor that will be unique and unrepeatable.

The products, after drying, are cooked in wood-fired ovens, where they remain for up to 5 days, where the temperature exceeding 1000 ºC gives the terracotta the incredible qualities of strength and compactness. The flames that surround the artifacts give the typical shades of a totally natural cooking. As you can see from the photos of the interior flooring, each artifact is unique, never equal to each other.

For the interiors, the customer chose our Cotto Terre Umbre, a clay that derives from the mixture of Sienese and Umbrian clay, which give the terracotta a light color, powder pink, a perfect mix of Tuscan terracotta and Umbrian terracotta.

The surface was then worked - before firing - to obtain a Lived Finish, as consumed by time. The format chosen is also the Cassettone, consisting of a square and 4 lozenges that turn around. This type of format, just like all polygons, is ideal to enhance an elegant and refined environment, to be combined with classic and elegant furnishing styles.

One of the important aspects to evaluate, in addition to the size and the laying scheme is definitely the color of your terracotta floor. Inside this imposing stone and brick structure, the points of light are scarce and the choice of a light terracotta floor helps to give the environment the right brightness.

That is why we always advise our customers to evaluate well, in addition to the pleasure and personal taste, also the technical need!

Outside, however, the choice fell on our Multicolor Cotto, formed by the set of Sienese and Umbrian clay, composed of a heterogeneous floor in color, as well as in shapes - due precisely to the artisanal origin of the bricks. The finishing choice is Antico Buttero, a surface finish that recalls in all respects the antique terracotta of recovery.
