Incomparable and extraordinary realisation of a multi-storey car park

Facade slats as special construction of type 624L

The Zollverein colliery, also known as the "Eiffel Tower of the Ruhr Area", was an active coal mine in Essen from 1851 to 1986. Today it is an architectural and industrial monument. A new multi-storey car park with 357 parking spaces was built at the Zollverein colliery in the coking plant area. The parking deck, which is open on all sides, is covered with a landscape slab.

The scope of services of MLL-HAMBURG® included the optimal ventilation of the entire parking deck and its protection of the laterally positioned transformer systems. In order to protect the technical systems from overheating and environmental influences, an MLL lamella system was chosen as a special construction with the Z-shaped 020L lamella. This lamella shape has proven itself in special constructions of this type, as it offers a larger free ventilation cross-section than comparable lamellas. With a free ventilation cross-section of 62%, this system offers optimum ventilation for this type of technical system. During the planning phase, the primary objective was to keep the weight of the superstructures as low as possible. Therefore light materials were used, e.g. the aluminium lamella system type 624L as a special construction. The parking deck is constructed with a rising reinforced concrete structure consisting of columns and wall sections with varying polygonal cross-sections and carries a reinforced concrete slab with multiple inclinations, which was designed with lawn areas and surface coatings. Concealed luminaires create a strip of light and remind one of glowing steel. The total dimensions are approx. 190 m x 47 m. The MLL lamellas were manufactured exclusively for this project in a special construction to fit the respective inclinations exactly and adapted individually to each other. For possible maintenance work on the technical systems, the proven MLL clip system was used, which makes it possible to remove the slats retrospectively and snap them back into their original position.

Due to the unusual construction method and the optimal integration of the total area, the parking garage fits perfectly into the surroundings of the Zollverein colliery and is an unusual and incomparable implementation of a parking garage.
